What Are My Options If I Want A Yorkshire Terrier?

leaf If you are interested in owning a Yorkshire terrier you may be wondering where to start in order to make it all happen for you.

There are plenty of options though and knowing what all is available is very important. That way you can choose the one that seems to be the best fit for you.

Most people are in the market for Yorkshire terrier puppies. They want to be able to have the very cute baby stages to experience with their pet.

They also want one that has a long life ahead of it. An older dog may not live as long and it may have some habits that aren’t appealing due to the care it got from the previous owner.

With that in mind though you can usually get an older Yorkshire terrier for much less money. It may be one from a breeder that they won’t be using to create offspring anymore.

It could be that the current owner can no longer care for it due to health issues or other concerns. They may even be offering the Yorkshire terrier for free to a good home as they want it to be well cared for.

The most expensive Yorkies are those that are extremely small in size. As a full adult the teacup Yorkshire terrier only weighs between 3 and 5 pounds.

That is a very small dog that you can carry around and that won’t take up much room in your home. Teacup Yorkies generally cost a couple thousand dollars depending on the breeder you get it from and the quality of the parents it comes from.

A Yorkshire terrier breeder is where most people get their Yorkie though. They are in the business of breeding quality males and females in order to generate enough offspring to meet the demand out there for them.

They do make some profit off the sales but not as much as one might think. It is very expensive to adequately provide shelter, food, and medical care for the Yorkies they are responsible for.

If you don’t have a breeder of Yorkies in your area that you want to work with you may have to go online and see who else out there is offering them. However, you are still going to have that high cost to contend with. The other option is to look for them at cheaper locations.

Many individuals can’t afford what the breeders are asking for a Yorkshire terrier. Therefore they watch the classified ads in various locations to see who is selling them from their home. They are much cheaper that way and you can often get just as good of a dog.

Many of these Yorkies end up at a shelter though due to someone not being able to care for them. Sometimes they are all removed from a breeder who wasn’t caring for them properly.

You can contact your local animal shelters and tell them you are looking for a Yorkshire terrier. Then they can contact you when any come in. However, you don’t know how long of a wait that may end up being.

There are also animal shelters out there specific to the Yorkshire terrier. These terrier rescues do have more of the dogs available.

Yet they also have a very in depth adoption process so it isn’t going to be immediate to take one home from there either. By comparing all these options though you will one day get the Yorkshire terrier you desire.
